The magnificent great shield of the Telamonian made legend for stopping the javelin of Trojan hero Hector. In the Homeric epic, it was a huge shield made of seven cow hides with a layer of bronze. Upon transcendence as an Instrumental Weapon, it shed its physical form to become a purely supernatural defense closer to a “barrier-type Program” than to an Instrumental Weapon.

First of all, the protective power of this barrier is fixed; it cannot be increased by “giving it more energy,” and its energy cost is limited to the necessary for manifesting it. Each and every single layer of the shield of Ajax can perfectly reject the exact same amount of power, defined by the formula:

This means each layer can block exactly 5913 units of power. The layer shift is instantaneous—namely, an attack that pierces a layer is immediately met by the next layer. Also, the protection is not persistent, meaning that once a layer blocks a certain amount of power, its defensive capabilities are reduced accordingly. To summarize, the shield of Ajax can only be defeated by a single attack of 5913x7 = 41391 power or by a succession of attacks adding to 41391 power units. However, the shield has one additional effect: it can be used to perfectly stop one single attack as a single-use perfect defense against any attack short of Seder Hishtalshelus and Forbidden Instruments that unravel Reality. This “perfect defense” is not limited to physical attacks.

Note that, in spite of its tremendous power, the shield of Ajax is still a “boundary-type” defense and thus can be manipulated (and unraveled) by Manipulation of Boundaries and any Technique capable of unraveling bounded fields. Lilith can attest to this, as she once made the mistake of using it to defend against Hecate. In spite of not having a solid physical form—attacks that meet it seem to bounce off huge iridescent walls of soapy water—it is still unidirectional: it only protects against attacks coming from a single direction.
