Relying in the Boundary of Dream and Nightmare and the Boundary of Comfort and Discomfort, Hecate crafted a lullaby to bring ease to her adoptive father’s ill dreams. This Program can only affect a target that is already asleep; it provides no narcotic effect.
The lullaby automatically dispels whatever nightmare the target is currently victim of. If the nightmare was a natural creation of the target’s brain, the lullaby transforms the nightmare into a pleasant dream within the same thematic framework of the original nightmare—namely; the nightmare ‘flows naturally’ into a good dream. If the nightmare was the result of a supernatural effect, the lullaby only dispels the bad dream, allowing the affected individual to enjoy a dreamless sleep.
Author’s Comments on the Program
This Program would make its only appearance in Book Four, Part One, Chapter Six (“Wormwood”). Under significant stress by the events of the past month and a half, Takato is plagued by terrible dreams of death and hopelessness. Hecate becomes aware of this only after she is witness to Takato’s uneasy sleep the one time he is using her lap as a pillow. Rather than just watching his face as he sleeps—what she had been doing so far—, young Arianne decides to give her ‘father’ some peace of mind, by crafting a lullaby full with her feelings of love towards him.
There was nobody around to listen, so Hecate took the straightforward approach and took her sincere words, fueled them with her power and her feelings, and turned them into Code. This was a private, personal confession of a false daughter’s sincere love. While it had no particular weight on the plot of GOSPEL as a whole, it was an intense moment for Arianne, and one of my favorite moments in the tale I once planned to weave.
It is a simple lullaby that portrays Arianne’s feelings to the fullest. Even if she wishes more than anything for her happiness to last forever, she is by nature pessimistic, and knows it will eventually come to a bitter end. However, when that time comes, if she is at least allowed to choose, she would rather die herself than live in a world without Takato. Those are her selfish yet pure feelings.
Author’s Comments on the Code
The text of this Program is in fact the English translation of the song “Sorriso”, by Shikata Akiko. After many years, it is still one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever had the pleasure to listen to. Since the early days of Reality Code, I knew nothing I ever wrote would be better than those lyrics to portray Arianne’s feelings, and thus I translated the original lyrics in Italian to EQUERIA.
“Your Smile” is a very simple, straightforward Code in EQUERIA PROTOCOL. It uses no particularly complex grammatical structures or any custom syntax methods. If there’s anything worthy of mention, it is Hecate’s choice of “naia naia” to say “never”. There’s no specific way to make that kind of absolute denial in EQUERIA—that is, there’s no single word for “never.” “Naia” is an adjective-like word used to describe ‘the lack of something’. Hecate probably chose this repetition to give the sentence a certain song-like flow with the many vowels.
