Matsuki Takato and Boundaries

The question is perfectly valid: how did the Tamer, Matsuki Takato, become the Architect of Boundaries? While his heroic spirit, a true rarity in this modern world where legends are diluted by globalization, is beyond reproach, the question remains: why Boundaries, of all things?

It is obvious to everyone who ponders this question that Takato does not have any conscious, willing connection to the concept of “Boundary”. He never actively thought about boundaries, or made them a relevant component of his everyday life. What, then, drew the Agenda’s attention towards the boy?

This is of particular relevance because the Agenda of Boundaries, throughout history, has not granted its power to many Supernals. It would not be farfetched to say that its pickiness rivals that of the Agenda of Supremacy. Even the other Supernal dearly favored by the Agenda, Greek Goddess Hecate, could only tap a fraction of the power over Boundaries Takato displayed during the Last Holy War.

So, why Takato?

Bound and Unbound

Boundaries are one of reality’s defining concepts. That is the reason the Agenda is so powerful. Boundaries define concepts by separating them from everything else. Concepts—and by consequence Agendas—cannot exist as a vague part of a diffuse wholeness. Concepts are concepts because they are unique and clearly distinguishable. In other words, concepts are not only defined by what they are, but also by what they are not. That most fundamental of distinctions—is, is not—is of course defined by a boundary. Lilith’s current Theory of Cosmogenesis suggests that it was one of the very first Concepts created, right after the concept of “Concept” itself.

In the same way, Boundaries define both humans and Supernals. Not just their very existence—there is a very clear boundary separating the ‘outline’ of my body from the rest of the world around me, after all—, but their daily lives.

Even without awareness of it, Matsuki Takato showed frightening adeptness at tampering with boundaries during his short life. He was a human who made it a habit to accomplish things supposedly beyond human—or even Supernal—reach. Let us take a look at some examples.

Matsuki Takato’s Power of Creation

It is said that, at one point in the Earth year 2013, Adam Kadmon began to laugh for no apparent reason. When asked about it by the Eternal Child Maiden, he stated that “a human just defied my Script.”

It would be incorrect to claim Guilmon’s creation was accomplished outside of Seder Hishtalshelus, for that is fundamentally impossible. However, there is no mistake in stating that Takato intended Guilmon’s creation to occur outside of the tenets of the Order of Development. Guilmon’s creation was a combination of efforts—Takato could not have achieved it without the Blue Card that changed his reader into a D-Arc, after all. Also, he only provided the “idea” (the Higher Séfira), which was then materialized by the creative power of the DigiGnomes (Lower Séfira). However, this does not change the fact that: (1) Guilmon’s creation came to be without Yggdrasil’s intervention; and (2) Takato’s wish managed to direct the DigiGnomes across the boundary between the worlds. It was Takato’s Wish, his Dream of being a real Tamer, which became the spark to ignite Guilmon’s existence.  However, neither became the Supernal Takato’s Agenda, but instead Boundaries, in answer to those he broke that day—the invisible boundary between worlds and the conceptual boundaries between levels of the Order of Development.

Tapping into a Different World

We already know that Takato unconsciously reached into the Digital World when dreaming of Guilmon coming to life. However, a question comes up: if DigiGnomes have to power to grant wishes, why did they only show their power at that time? Why did nobody have their most outrageous and impossible desires fulfilled before?

We could ponder on the existence of a connection between Takato and the DigiGnomes; a reason they responded to his wishes and not anybody else’s (with counted exceptions). Not only Guilmon, but the multiple summonings of Blue Cards throughout the Tamers’ adventures, and maybe even Calumon—the Digi-Entelechy did not show any amount of control over its power before using the Shining Evolution. Such was the intensity of Takato’s wishes, that it broke through whatever impediments prevent the DigiGnomes from responding to all of humanity’s honest and selfish desires. Or maybe it was the other way around: only Takato’s wishes reached the DigiGnomes in a way that drove them to act on them in such a consistent manner.

It cannot be considered heroic; to tap on the power of otherworldly creatures, but it is definitely “achieving the impossible.” And there are still questions left if we take this at face value; questions that only found answers when Takato returned as a Supernal trinity and Takako forced him to sit down and think about his previous life.

Manipulation of the Soul

Matsuki Takato had no understanding of the concept of “soul”. However, it is undeniable that he was the first one to instinctively develop the method to diffuse the boundary of his Existence just enough to merge with his Digimon partner without destroying himself in the process. He had the advantage of being in a more malleable realm such as the Digital World, but the fact remains that nobody had achieved this before, and until that happened it was not believed to be possible.

In Adam Kadmon’s own words: “Matsuki Takato, in his heart, understood the Soul more than anybody else besides me.”

The fact that Bio-merging is actually possible is a significant hint on the actual nature of those most elusive concepts: “Existence” and “Soul”.

Vessel of Chaos

Takato himself was the most powerful Bounded Field. How else can anyone explain that fact he was the first viable artificial vessel of the entity we know as “Chaos”? Furthermore, the only one of his Incarnations able to fully harmonize with it? This was Takato’s own merit, not a consequence of his unusual genetic make-up.

Adam Kadmon explained it: “in his effort at countering the disruptive effect of Chaos in his body, Takato willingly—albeit not in a manner he consciously controlled—reconfigured his Existence into the optimal container for Chaos. It would be the equivalent of, say, adjusting yourself into becoming the best possible recipient of a specific Agenda. This worked because, unlike the previous, natural vessels, Takato never outright rejected Chaos. He rejected its thoughts, its plans and its beliefs, but it accepted Chaos as part of he.”

When asked how Takato actually accomplished this, Adam shrugged and answered: “manipulating one’s own Soul is considerably easier than tampering with the Soul of another. Furthermore, everyone manipulates their own Existence constantly, all the time. Takato just went the extra mile…or more like, allowed his Existence to go the extra mile on its own. Creation was made to be sturdy, you know.”

The Accomplishments that Make a Legend

The original Matsuki Takato knew no barriers. It must be noted that his great accomplishments and heroics were achieved either without relying on his supernatural powers, without awareness of such powers or without control over those powers (and sometimes even in spite of those powers). By the time Takato got a rather loose idea of the power he possessed, he was too weak to actually exploit it to the fullest. On the other hand, had he been able to do so, he probably would not have become Supernal upon death. Takato transcended not only because of his deeds, but because he performed those deeds when it could have been so much easier to just lie down and give up.

He transcended because he bled, sweat and cried out every single droplet of his fragile and short life. Anybody who says otherwise will end up with a lot of very strong people on his heels, Nonaka Rika first of them.

Matsuki Takato’s Beginning

Obviously, the original Matsuki Takato was 100% human. His unique origin and constitutive make-up does not change this fact. Matsuki Takato was born from Matsuki Takehiro and Mie. It was the growing fetus which was modified by Gennai’s DNA Patch. The patch did not give him extraordinary powers, either; his physical and mental performance were both well within normal human parameters—we would hope to believe it would have been noticed either at home or at school if he had any extraordinary talents.

The DNA Patch itself was grasping at straws. How could anyone hope to predict which human body the very concept of “absence of concept” would choose to inhabit, really? If Chaos claimed Takato’s body, it was because Chaos wanted Matsuki Takato, not because of whatever minor genetic manipulations the DNA Patch performed.

However, the powers he did not receive from the DNA Patch he received from another source: the Digital Hazard.

Thus, Matsuki Takato was born the living vessel of Chaos and the bearer of the Digital Hazard – Alpha. Now, Chaos was not stupid: there was no point to unleashing its power and thus break its vessel while he was a toddler. Hence, Chaos went to sleep—waiting ten or so years is nothing for such an entity.

Takato grew for ten years as an ordinary human child, unaware of the many eyes who carefully watched over his development. His perception of the world was as expected from a boy his age, only hued by a notable sensitivity and “purity” rare even amongst children in modern times. Some years later, Nonaka Rika would often point out Takato’s apparent inability to lie properly. Helping with his parents’ business gave Takato a much needed sense of duty and responsibility, as well as a decent perceptual learning sense—Takato learns better by watching, imitating and improvising rather than by studying whatever theory behind a topic there may be—. The Tamers Henry Wong and Nonaka Rika could attest to this by bringing up Takato’s learning curve as a Digimon Tamer.

On the other hand, Takato was incapable of thinking in the middle- to long-term. Planning ahead of time appeared to be beyond him, which may explain his (in Nonaka Rika's words) "disappointing" lack of skill at any sort of strategy game. In addition, he was an emotional creature, which meant he sometimes jumped into action without properly evaluating his options. Even as a young child, Takato was very passionate about things, the pinnacle of which could be seen the day Leomon was slain and his data absorbed by Beelzemon.

Matsuki Takato & Adam Kadmon

The human, Matsuki Takato, Code Name ‘Asmodeus’, was the culmination of Adam’s greatest plan.

Adam needed a brand new Aeternal, completely untainted by the Supernal Realm. Not just that: he needed a hero.

He could not just take the child of Angel A and Angel B--he did not want a "pre-made" Supernal. He could not use Micael, either, or any other entity he could just create with Seder Hishtalshelus. He wanted a human forged by strife and tempered by kindness--he wanted "the motivation which drives the weak to sacrifice themselves for the sake of others." A human with power but without greed, who would unhesitatingly bow before his supreme power. However, he also needed a human connected to him with a bond far stronger than the one naturally provided by the human soul.

Then he came into knowledge of Sophia’s and Lilith’s “Project GOSPEL.” While he scoffed at the idea of his two wives believing they could “craft” a perfect Incarnation for him, he appreciated the gesture and admired their effort, so he kept an eye on their progress. He was admittedly disappointed by the first six failures of Project ADAM, and he was not willing to sacrifice his manliness by using “Gabrielle”. Hence he went with binding Chaos to "Asmodeus" to see what happened.

The results mesmerized him. Matsuki Takato brought tears to his eyes.

Supremely manly tears, of course.

As long as the person was heroic enough, Adam could have tampered with his Existence enough to make it his new Incarnation upon death. There are no words to describe how pleased he was to learn Takato had earned ascension to Aeternal status on his own merit. When he learned what Agenda the new Aeternal, Matsuki Takato, would receive, Heaven was filled with the radiant of the energy of his laughter.

This could only be Supreme good fortune, indeed!

Matsuki Takato’s Purpose

The general specs demanded by COSMO_INFERIA meant not even Adam could execute it on his own, at least not without his Reality Script. The exact synchrony required meant two people working together would never pull it off. What was necessary was an impossibility: two beings acting as of one mind, yet independently enough to be able to process separate lines of Reality Code at the same time.

This was the weakness of Adam’s plan. Even if he managed to become a “double Incarnation”, sharing a vessel with his chosen hero, he feared two things: first, that his sublime existence would overwhelm and assimilate the second entity, effectively nullifying its presence—basically what happened between Lilith and Gabriel. Second, that even if the second entity managed to retain its “individuality”, he would not be able to manage the tremendous bandwidth necessary to execute COSMO_INFERIA.

It was Takato, not Adam, who solved this problem by developing Border Script and thus completing Cosmo_Superbia Protocol.

After Takato did that, and Micael later tested the new language, Adam knew what he had to do to complete himself.

  • Guilmon and Ryuudamon were his creations, and Takato loves them like they were his children. In the same way, they see Takato as their creator and love him as if he were their father.
  • To Nix, Takato was her savior and the one who gave her a purpose and a sense of belonging. She worshiped him and gave everything of herself to serve him, and in the end she died for him. Takato could have brought her back, of course, but chose instead to give her a new life in which she would not have to fight for her life every day. He mourned her loss deeply.
  • Making Renamon his partner was an accident. Takato did not think it proper to just destroy the artificial Digimon, but it was not a creature he could just allow to let go on its own, as it carried the potential to become Millenniummon again. Turns out Takato did not really have to worry: the experience of being Adonamon changed Moloch’s partner dramatically and in the best possible way. He is even more serious and colder than the other Renamon Takato is acquainted with, but he is at peace with himself, Takato, and the world.
  • Takato never set aside his Digimon partners to instead use his Supernal powers. Every little advantage could make a difference, especially in the early stages when he was still getting the hang of Boundaries. However, he was never so reckless as to send them to fight enemies beyond their power.
  • Were their Tamer an ordinary human, Takato’s partners would likely outlive him before allowing themselves to die. However, they feel Takato will probably outlive the natural degradation of their constitutive data (they are right). They know Takato can delay, if not outright prevent this from happening. Thus, they will die when they choose to. Not a day before.

Supernal Profile

Supernal Name (Reality Network ID): TAKATO_DEVAT_HAPHVYASHTHARVA (former)

                                                               ADAM_EL_COSMO_INFERIA (current)

Entity Type: Aeternal

Aeternal/Divinity Association: Heroic Mortal

Supernal Level: 95

Aeternal/Divinity Status: Absolute

Agendas: Boundaries, Suffering*

*Agenda he received during the execution of COSMO_INFERIA.

  • Upon ascension to Supernal status, Takato immediately Incarnated in a reproduction of his body crafted by Seder Hishtalshelus, shared with Metatron and Adam Kadmon. He was involved in the bulk of the fighting throughout the Holy War, protecting both humans and Supernals from Moloch’s machinations.
  • When he was not fighting, he was studying. Both Takako and the Akashic Records taught him what he needed to know to fulfill his purpose.
  • The knowledge of Adam’s plan and an understanding of the basics of Reality Code were not enough for him to finish COSMO_SUPERBIA PROTOCOL, especially because mastery of Boundaries was still beyond him. It was only the knowledge he gained from Hecate upon her annihilation which allowed him to create Border Script and then finish Adam’s original assembly language.
  • After leading the forces of righteousness to victory in the Battle of Armageddon, Takato faced Moloch and his partner Millenniummon in solo combat on the Day of the Beast. The collision of Takato’s Manipulation of Boundaries and MoonMillenniummon’s dimension-unraveling powers dragged both Takato and the Evil God Digimon to the Limbo between Realms, leaving only Moloch unscathed.
  • Even within Limbo, Takato’s power over Boundaries allowed him to subtly help his companions in their most difficult battles in the Tabernacle of Broken Worlds. In the climax of the decisive battle against Moloch and Satan, the combined power of the Sephiroth Cards unleashed the final amalgamation of Adam, Takato, Takato’s Digimon partners and Millenniummon. Adonamon defeated the Tyrants of Hell and created a whole new Digital World, which he then ruled from his floating fortress in the sky, Merkava.
  • His final role as the individual Aeternal Takato was to participate in the execution of COSMO_INFERIA, taking the Agenda of Suffering from Sophia before fully merging with Adam Kadmon to create the True Supreme.
